About Xavier University

Xavier University is a co-educational Jesuit university, located in Cincinnati, which is the county seat of Hamilton County, situated in the US state of Ohio, with a population estimated at a number of more than 333 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 3rd largest city in the state. The city is known for having one of the larger collections of 19th century Italianate architecture in USA, primarily contained in the north downtown area called Over-the-Rhine, which is one of the largest historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Xavier University was founded in 1831, first starting as a men's college, in downtown Cincinnati, and it was the first Catholic institution of higher learning in the Northwest Territory, being recognized today as the 4th oldest Jesuit University and the 6th oldest Catholic one in the country. The university was originally known as The Athenaeum, which was later changed to St. Xavire College, in honor of the 16th century Spanish Catholic, adopting its curent name in 1930.

Since it first opened its doors to students, Xavier has significantly grown, having today a total enrollment of of about 4000 undergraduate and 2600 graduate students, offering 81 majors through the colleges of Social Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Health and Education, and the Williams College of Business, being recognized as one of the top ten "Master's Universities" in the Midwest for the last 14 years by U.S. News & World Report, also being named one of the best 366 colleges in the United States by The Princeton Review, among other high rankings.

Athletics

Xavier's athletic teams are known as the Xavier Musketeers, who compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Atlantic Ten Conference, in 8 intercollegiate sports for men and 8 for women, the men's basketball being, perhaps, the best known sport at the university, due to the fact that in this sports, the Musketeers have enjoyed considerable recent success, reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament in 2004 and 2008, the university being one of only two non-BCS schools to be listed among the top 20 most valuable programs in college basketball (the other being UNLV) according to Forbes.
